Julie Leslie Thompson is an American former college volleyball player for University of San Francisco of West Coast Conference.

Biography

Born in Ridgefield, Washington, Thompson was raised with two older brothers. She was a multi-sport athlete growing up and began gymnastics at an early age. However, she did not begin playing volleyball until age 14 when she joined attended Ridgefield High School in Ridgefield, Washington, where she was a three-time all-league pick and was named All-American.

During Thompson’s junior and senior seasons, the Ridgefield High girls volleyball team finished second in the state in 1980 and ’81. In track, Thompson won the state Class-A long jump title at 18 feet, 6½ inches.

Thompson played college volleyball for the Portland Pilots where she was a standout outside hitter, and was twice named to the ALL-tournament team. She transferred to the University of San Francisco for her last two years of volleyball. She red-shirted her first season there, but during the next season, in a match against Pepperdine, she blew out a knee ligament. After recovering, she played her senior season under a new coach, Laurie Corbelli.

Personal Life

In 1987, she married professional basketball player Mychal Thompson and she gave birth to three sons: Mychel (b. 1988), Klay (b. 1990), and Trayce (b. 1991). Mychel played briefly in the NBA, while Klay is a shooting guard for the Golden State Warriors, and Trayce is an outfielder for the Cleveland Indians.
