Drederick Rubin Irving (born January 11, 1966) is an American former professional basketball player who played two seasons in the Australian National Basketball League (NBL). He is the father of current NBA player Kyrie Irving.

Early Life

Irving was born in New York City to Lillian Irving. One of seven children, Irving grew up in the Bronx's Mitchel housing projects. Irving had little contact with his father, who left the family when he was a toddler, his mother working two jobs to support the family. At an early age, Irving was exposed to gang violence, crime, and police raids.

Basketball Career

Irving attended and played basketball at Stevenson High School in The Bronx before playing college basketball for  Boston University. During each of his four years, Irving helped the Terriers advance to the North Atlantic Conference Championship game. In 1988 the club claimed the NAC title, earned the school's third invitation to the NCAA Tournament and Irving became BU's all-time leading scorer with 1,931 points.

After graduating from BU with a degree in economics, Irving was invited to join the Boston Celtics training camp roster, but didn't secure a roster spot. In 1992, Irving signed with the Bulleen Boomers of the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL). Irving played for the Boomers in the 1992 season, dominating the league, averaging 30 points per game.

Family

Irving's first wife, Elizabeth, played volleyball at Boston University, where they met; died from an illness in 1996 and the couple had two children, daughter Asia and son Kyrie. Irving raised them with the help of his sisters. Asia is an aspiring model, while Kyrie plays for the Boston Celtics in the NBA. Through Kyrie, Irving has one granddaughter, Azurie. Irving remarried in 2004, and had a second daughter, London. Irving has dual citizenship in the United States and Australia.
